Natalie was born and raised in Edinburgh, Scotland, to Stage Actress/Director mother, Althea Dando, and father John Sutherland. Being raised within the field of acting, Natalie caught the ‘bug’ after her mother cast her in a show at the age of 8. Natalie stepped in to replace another young actress at the time and made a deal that if she did the show then her mother would buy her the roller skates she wanted. Negotiating at a young age, Althea knew her daughter would do ‘ok’ on the business side at least! Natalie stepped out onto that stage and that moment she says she “will never ever forget”.
Starting as a dancer, Natalie trained extensively and competed in Jazz, Ballet, Tap, Rock’n roll and Scottish Highland. She went on to train at The Edinburgh Acting School where she met her first acting mentor, a teacher from Los Angeles, David W.W. Johnstone. It didn’t take long for Natalie to go full time into the world of entertainment. Starring in musicals where she combined her dance training with her acting, she crossed over into commercials, film and theatre, and what was once a young hobby, turned into a profession.
Natalie took the plunge and crossed the pond at only 20 and started working as an actress in Los Angeles, California. She has starred in over 20 stage productions between the UK and in Los Angeles, including the Award Winning and Critically Acclaimed ‘TRAINSPOTTING’, which was nominated for several LA Drama Critics Awards, ‘THE BODY’ opposite Emmy Award Winning Actress Susan Clarke, and most recently Pulitzer Prize Winner Donald Margulies’ ‘COLLECTED STORIES’, which not only ran at The Odyssey Theatre to rave reviews, but continued on overseas and had a spectacular run at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival!
Natalie’s training continued in Los Angeles, at The Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute, then at the world famous BEVERLY HILLS PLAYHOUSE under the guidance of the brilliant Milton Katselas. After the passing of Milton, Natalie then became a founding member of The Jocelyn Jones Acting Studio in L.A.
After the success of ‘COLLECTED STORIES’, Natalie wrote and published a book, namely, “Confessions of a Hollywood Bartender”, which got the attention of a Producer in Hollywood. After a creative meeting, Natalie went on to write, create, executive produce and star in her own proof pilot episode of a TV Series she created, inspired by her book. The Pilot shot in Los Angeles, California, and she stars opposite “Beverly Hills 90210’s” Trevor Donovan, MTV’s “Awkward” star Greer Grammer, Ryan Merriman, Lindsey McKeon, Yves Bright, “Homeland’s” Jared Ward, “Boardwalk Empire’s” Chris Caldovino, Carlos Moreno Jr and Roberto Montesinos to name a few.
These past 3 years have proved to be the busiest for Natalie. A movie she had the pleasure of shooting, namely “GOOK”, which was written and directed by her dear friend Justin Chon (of the ‘Twilight’ Series) went on to premiere at the world famous SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL to sold out audiences and winning the Sundance Audience Award. ‘GOOK’ was then bought by Samuel Goldwyn Films and opened in cinemas Nationwide.
Natalie then landed a supporting role in the feature film ‘FIVE PIECE’, which had a terrific run in the Festival Circuit and thus landed a distribution deal. Natalie received her 2nd career nomination for BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A FEATURE FILM for ‘Five Piece’ at The Cinema Soup Film Festival in Illinois. The movie has been nominated for a total of 12 Awards so far, and has WON 2 BEST FEATURE FILM AWARDS, a BEST ACTOR AWARD and BEST SOUND IN A FEATURE FILM. The movie is now streaming on AMAZON PRIME.
Natalie went on to star in the Hit Comedic Web Series “FAME DOGS”, which opened to over 50,000 views in the first week and then landed itself 7 Indie Series Awards Nominations. Natalie herself was Nominated for “BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES”. The Show took home the Awards for BEST ENSEMBLE CAST IN A COMEDY SERIES & BEST COMEDY SERIES ON THE WEB!
Natalie then flew off to Minnesota to film a fabulous GUEST STAR ROLE in ABC’s ‘IN AN INSTANT’ where she speaks with her native tongue, playing the role of a Scottish lass! It was a dream job indeed:)
In 2018 Natalie made her first Directorial Debut with the stage production of Darlene Traviotto’s ‘PIZZA MAN’. The show opened at the The Complex Theatre in Hollywood, California and starred the brilliant Jazz Raycole, Teri Andrez and Christian Gehring. The show was a great success and dished up an evening of many surprises!
In 2019 Natalie continued on her directing path, working with some amazing actors in a teaser for a new movie that she wrote, ‘ISABELLA’, and a teaser for a new Television Series she co-wrote called ‘GOING LEGIT’, starring Grant Harvey, Jeremy Luke, Michelle Burke, Chris Caldovino and Bruno Amato, to name a few.
Natalie can also be seen worldwide in the Festival Comedic Hit Short Film, ‘FXXXEN AMERICANS’ where she plays a female William Wallace type and stars opposite her friend (and ‘DYNASTY’ Star) Grant Show.
She can also be seen in the beautiful short film “THE DAY”, (under ‘videos’ link) and in the feature film ‘SAVAGED’, directed by the wonderful Michael Ojeda, where she plays the small town local Police Officer.
2020 came and of course, the world shifted. Having to adjust to filming in a very strange time, Natalie managed to star as the lead in a new movie by Writer/Director Matthew Roth (of FIVE PIECE, and CANNIBAL COLLECTOR – both on AMAZON). The movie wrapped in mid October and is now in post production.
During 2020 Natalie wrote another feature film called ‘SEARCHING’, that she produced, directed and starred in. She shares the screen with some brilliant acting peers including Jazz Raycole, Shannon Farrara, Michael Paul and Lisa London. The film wrapped in November of 2020 and is also now in post production.
Natalie has two films that are slated to start at the beginning of 2021. ‘ISABELLA’ and ‘RAINDANCE’, which is being produced by herself and Scotland’s wonderful Carina Birrell. ‘RAINDANCE’ films entirely in Scotland and Natalie will be playing one of the leads opposite Carina Birrell. Both were written by her and she is on board to direct.
